Moving house broadband supplier

Just as important as picking a good removal company, it’s always best to notify your connectivity supplier well ahead of the time before you move. And that includes moving house broadband & phone supply. Remember that closing the account at your current address and ensuring your supply at the new one can take some time – a good rule of thumb is to notify them at least 30 days in advance.

Of course, you’re free to organise your utilities when moving according to your preferences. Feel free to request your current supplier to activate at your new home (and keep your current package!), adopt the new house’s current supplier or even switch suppliers – it’s all up to you and your needs. (In fact, moving home might be a good time to look at the budget and available prices and services, to reassess and see if you’re getting the best service for your needs.)

Internet speed & stability when moving house broadband supply

Can you move internet router to another house?

Yes, usually you take your router with you, because the route normally belongs to you. But NOTE: The router is not your internet supply. There’s a difference between your supplier package and your router – the router is just a means of connecting. So you can’t just take the router with you and expect the same internet supply.

You have to notify your supplier that you’re moving. And, once they’ve confirmed that you’re supplied at the new address, you should be able to plug in your router and use the supply there. But NOTE: That’s only if you own the router. If your supplier owns the router or asks you to leave it behind, you’ll have to do as they say, especially if you’re moving house broadband to a different supplier at the new address.

How long does it take to set up internet in a new house?

It usually takes around 2 weeks for a supplier to set up at a new address. But, just to be safe, when moving house with broadband, try to notify your supplier as far in advance as possible – at least 30 days, so they have ample time to sort out your new supply.

Quick moving house broadband speed checker

When moving house broadband, you want the same speed, stability & performance as before. So, when you arrive at your new house, you can run a quick speed test and make sure you’re happy with the performance. Do it online. Here’s a popular online speed tester, and here’s one by Ofcom

What happens if you move house during broadband contract?

If you’re still under contract, most suppliers will let you take your broadband with you to your new home – if they supply that area. There might be a small charge for activation, but not always. However, if you want to switch suppliers or cancel, you might have to pay and early termination fee.

Can I move my broadband when I move house?

Yes. Contact your supplier (see above steps) and notify them of your move. If they supply the area you’re moving to, they should be able to just move your broadband with you. If you want to move to a different supplier, though, just be sure you’re OK with any cancellation fees that might apply with your current supplier. And then contact your new supplier and ask them to arrange the transfer for you.

How do I transfer Internet to a new house?

You contact your supplier 30 days before your move. Give them your old and new address details and moving dates, and ask them to set it up for you. See above – we’ve included specific details, steps and contact info for individual suppliers.

Do I need to cancel my broadband before switching?

No, your new broadband might take some time to set up, so you want to still have internet until it’s ready to go. Contact your new supplier first and arrange your activation date with them. Then contact your current supplier to cancel only from effect on the same date – of course cancellation fees might apply.

HOT TIP: When moving home broadband suppliers (switching) to someone new at a new home, it’s always best to ask your NEW supplier to set up your service for you. They want new customers, so they’ll arrange the whole thing on your behalf – saves you a ton of effort!
