Energy. Broadband. And moving in or out. Here’s an easy step-by-step guide to manage moving home with SSE as your supplier.

8 April 2021

Gas. Electricity. Home phone & broadband. Our team has put together a quick guide to moving home with SSE as your utilities supplier.

Because, just as important as picking a good removal company, it’s always best to notify your energy or broadband supplier at least 28-30 days before you move. And SSE has specific contacts and steps, whether you want to keep them or switch, take them with you, sign up as a new customer or even arrange a change of tenancy when renting. Here’s how it works:

Moving Home with SSE

SSE is one of the biggest and best-known energy suppliers in the UK. But it also provides a full suite of services, from SSE gas and electric to home phone and broadband supply. So the convenience for many people is that you could bundle a lot of your utilities with SSE and get only one bill.

But in early 2020, news broke that SSE were bought over by OVO, and that’s true. However, SSE customers needn’t worry, it seems like SSE is just continuing as normal, for now, so you needn’t be too concerned about your account right now. We’ll let you know if anything changes, but for now, these are the steps to take when you’re moving home with SSE as your supplier:

1. Moving home and taking SSE with you (transfer)

If your broadband, gas or electricity is currently supplied by SSE, it’s best to always plan to notify them of your move at least 28-30 days ahead of time. Here’s how:

Step 1: Notify SSE Energy that you’re moving

For SSE gas and electricity, go to their dedicated online link here and complete the prompts on the screen. You’ll need to supply them with your current and new address, as well as your moving dates and preferably opening and closing meter readings. You can get help with online chat on their website contacts page or phone 0345 600 2006.

Step 2: Notify SSE Broadband & Phone of your move

For SSE internet and landlines, notify them via a message on the contact form on this link. You’ll basically just need to tell them your moving dates and where you’re moving to. And then you can also select a new package, if you’d like, but you’ll keep your router and you won’t have to pay anything for the setup in your new home. For help, phone 0345 071 9626.

2. Moving into a home supplied by SSE

Not an SSE customer? Activating an SSE service is super easy – especially if your new home is already supplied.

Step 1: Let SSE Energy know you’re moving in

For SSE gas & electricity, there’s a special move-in web link right here that you can just follow the prompts to complete. They’ll capture some of your personal details and help you set up an energy package that works for you. And again, get help via online chat on their website contacts page or phone 0345 600 2006.

Step 2: Let SSE Broadband know you’re moving in

There’s no dedicated new customer link for phone and broadband services. But you can basically just look at the available packages here and then contact them – try the online chat on their website contacts page or phone 0345 071 9626.

3. Moving out and closing your SSE account

Although SSE would likely love to negotiate products and prices to keep you on board, if you really want to move and switch your service to someone else, the best way is to actually contact your NEW suppliers and have them arrange the switch for you. Note: It can take up to 21 days to switch your energy supply, and SSE will still be supplying you until the switch is complete, so keep in mind that you’ll need to supply them with your meter readings. They’ll likely run an interim account for the duration of the switch period and then send you a final bill to close it off.

Also note: Depending on your package, cancelling before the end of your current supply agreement could result in early termination fees.

4. For landlords: Transfer tenancy with SSE

If you’re a landlord, property manager or letting agent, SSE has a dedicated page for moving tenants in or out. Find it here.

Additional info for Moving Home with SSE

Can I leave SSE at any time?

Yes. You are within your rights to cancel any service at any time, and that includes anything supplied by SSE. Just note that, if you’ve taken out a contract or signed an agreement with SSE, the terms of that agreement applies. And some of them require that you pay an early exit fee if you cancel more than 49 days before the contract ends. It all depends on your specific agreement, but, for example, standard tariff energy supply doesn’t have an exit fee.

Do you take your SSE smart meter with you when you move house?

No. In most cases, you leave behind your In-Home-Device (IHD) that connects to your smart meter at the address. If your new home has a smart meter, there should be a new IHD there waiting for you. You can always double-check with your supplier if you’re unsure.

Is SSE being taken over?

SSE was officially bought by the OVO group of companies in January 2020. But very little changes for customers and shareholders. SSE still operates as usual, with all the usual services etc.
