What to Do When Moving Home with Npower (aka EON Next)
Easy switching. Registering a new home. And taking your services with you. Our team has put together a quick guide to moving home with Npower – now to be EON Next – as your home energy, gas and electric supplier.
Now, just as important as picking a good removal company, it’s always best to notify your energy supplier at least 28-30 days before you move. And Npower has specific contacts and steps, whether you want to keep them or switch, take them with you, sign up as a new customer or even get a change of tenancy form when renting. Here’s how it works:
Moving home with Npower (EON Next)
NOTE: Npower is one of the UK’s “big six” largest energy suppliers, and they were bought by EON in 2019. Now, Npower customers are being moved to EON Next, a subsidiary of EON, and the new home for Npower. Which means that the Npower website and services are still only active for a limited time while everything’s being moved over to EON Next. To make things clear, we’ve included links and info to both Npower and EON Next in this post.
1 Moving Home and taking Npower (EON Next) with you
If Npower is your current supplier, you’ll have to notify them at least 28 days in advance that you’re moving. Here’s how to do it:
Step 1: Notify Npower (EON Next) that you’re moving
Log into your account on the Npower website here to notify Npower of your move. Or, since EON Next is the real new supplier for your Npower account, send an email to EON Next at firstname.lastname@example.org to notify them of your move.
Step 2: Have all the right information available
Supply Npower/EON Next with your current and new address, as well as the dates you’re moving out and moving into the new home. Then, also prepare to take your final meter readings at the old property and, if possible, the opening reading at your new house.
Step 3: Confirm whether you want them to keep supplying you
EON Next (aka Npower’s new owner) asks that you confirm if you’d like them to keep supplying your energy via email at email@example.com.
2. Moving into a house with Npower (EON Next) – new customer
As a new customer, activating your Npower/EON NExt service is super easy – especially if your new home is already supplied.
Step 1: Let them know you’re moving in
You can click on this special moving-in link for new customers on the Npower website here. You’ll be asked to complete some basic details, starting with the area code you’re moving to etc. (You’ll basically just register with your details.) Alternatively, just drop an email to EON Next at firstname.lastname@example.org, supplying them with your name, contact details, your move-in date, address and opening meter readings.
Step 2: Choose your service
If your move-in date is really close or passed, you might be put onto a general package until you’ve chosen the energy package that suits your needs. Again, for options, you can just request a quote via email@example.com.
3. Moving out and closing your Npower (EON Next) account
Although Npower (EON Next) would love to negotiate products and prices to keep you onboard, if you really want to move and switch your service to someone else, the best way is to actually contact your NEW suppliers and have them arrange the switch for you. Note: It can take up to 21 days to switch your energy supply, and Npower (EON Next) will still be supplying you until the switch is complete, so keep in mind that you’ll need to supply them with your meter readings. They’ll likely run an interim account for the duration of the switch period and then send you a final bill to close it off.

What happens to my energy supplier when I move house?
You need to notify your supplier that you’re moving – at least 30 days before your move. That’s because it takes time to close off your account at your current address and set up a new one for your new address. NOTE: You’re allowed to manage your energy supply however you prefer. You can take your current supplier with you or switch to a new one.
Do I take my smart meter with me when I move house?
No. In most cases, you leave behind your In-Home-Device (IHD) that connects to your smart meter at the address. If your new home has a smart meter, there should be a new IHD there waiting for you. You can always double-check with your supplier if you’re unsure.
How do I change my energy supplier in a new home?
To find the current electricity supplier at your new home, enter the address details into the Energy Networks Association’s online search tool. Remember that you’re free to choose your own supplier, so, if you want to switch up, phone the new supplier you want to join and ask them to do the switch for you. For gas, consult the Meter Point Association’s online search tool, or phone 0870 608 1524 (calls charged at 7p per minute).
Once you know who supplies you, you can shop around for potential new energy suppliers – see our moving house energy supplier page. And, if you want to switch, it’s best to contact your new energy supplier and ask them to help you make the transfer – they want more business, so they’re always super willing to help you switch to them.
Can I take my energy supplier with me when I move?
Yes! Most people want to stick with their current supplier, and that’s why you notify them 28 days in advance, so they can ensure you’re supplied when you arrive at your new home. Each supplier has their own contacts and process for moving, but basically, you just notify them and they close off the account at your old address and activate one at your new home.
